Vom Berg Gurugu aus kann man die spanische Enklave Melilla an der nordafrikanischen Mittelmeerküste sehen. Afrika und die Europäische Union sind hier durch einen hochgesicherten Grenzzaun getrennt, der aus drei Zäunen besteht.
Flüchtlinge, vor allem aus der Subsahara-Region, leben in den Wäldern am Fuße des Berges und versuchen, diese direkte Landgrenze zwischen Marokko und Spanien zu überqueren.
Einer von ihnen ist Abou Bakar Sidibé aus Mali, der sowohl Protagonist als auch Dokumentarist in Les Sauteurs ist.
Nach 14 Monaten im informellen Lager und mehreren gescheiterten Versuchen, das Zaunsystem zu überwinden, beginnt Abou zu filmen – seinen Alltag, die Umgebung, das zermürbende Warten auf den nächsten „Sprung“.
Er gibt Einblicke in die soziale Organisation der Gemeinschaft und vermittelt einen düsteren Ausblick auf das vermeintliche El Dorado Europa.
Les Sauteurs präsentiert einen einzigartigen Perspektivwechsel:
Das abstrakte, anonyme Wärmebild der Überwachungskamera wird der subjektiven Sichtweise eines Individuums gegenübergestellt.
Nachdem er Moritz Siebert und Estephan Wagner getroffen hat, übernimmt Sidibé ihre Kamera.
Unermüdlich dokumentiert er seine Realität am Rande einer abgeschotteten EU.

From Mount Gurugu, you can see the Spanish enclave of Melilla on the North African Mediterranean coast. Africa and the European Union are separated here by a high-security border fence consisting of three fences.
Refugees, mostly from the sub-Saharan region, live in the forests at the foot of the mountain, attempting to cross this direct land border between Morocco and Spain.
One of them is Abou Bakar Sidibé from Mali, who is both the protagonist and documentarian in Les Sauteurs.
After 14 months in the informal camp and several failed attempts to overcome the fence system, Abou begins to film—his everyday life, the surroundings, the grueling wait for the next “jump.”
He provides insight into the social organization of the community and a bleak outlook on the supposed El Dorado of Europe.
Les Sauteurs presents a unique change of perspective: the abstract, anonymous thermal image of the surveillance camera is contrasted with the subjective view of an individual.
After meeting Moritz Siebert and Estephan Wagner, Sidibé takes over their camera.
He tirelessly documents his reality on the margins of a closed-off EU.
