Paris Is Burning (1990) ist ein Dokumentarfilm über die Ballroom-Kultur im New York der 1980er Jahre, insbesondere innerhalb afroamerikanischer und latinx queerer Communities.
Der Film zeigt, wie queere Communities ihre eigenen Räume für Ausdruck, Kreativität und Wahlfamilie geschaffen haben—gefüllt mit Mode, Tanz, Wettbewerb und eindrucksvollen persönlichen Geschichten.
Außerdem gibt der Dokumentarfilm einigen der bekanntesten Persönlichkeiten der Szene eine Stimme.
Sie sprechen über die Regeln und Strukturen der Balls, das Leben in Wahlfamilien (Häusern) sowie über ihre persönlichen Hoffnungen, Träume und täglichen Herausforderungen.
Über die Feier der Ballroom-Szene hinaus macht der Film auch die Gefahren und die Gewalt sichtbar, denen queere People of Color zu dieser Zeit in New York ausgesetzt waren.

Paris Is Burning (1990) is a documentary about ballroom culture in 1980s New York, particularly within African American and Latinx queer communities.
The film shows how queer communities created their own spaces for expression, creativity and chosen family—filled with fashion, dance, competition and impressive personal stories.
The documentary also gives a voice to some of the scene’s most prominent figures.
They talk about the rules and structures of the balls, life in chosen families (houses), and their personal hopes, dreams, and daily challenges.
Beyond celebrating the ballroom scene, the film also highlights the dangers and violence that queer people of colour faced in New York at the time.
We are collecting donations for two of our friends to support them in their fight against the racist German immigration system—especially with legal fees and rent.
